Tara means rescuer and is the second of Dasa Mahavidyas. Mainly Tara is a form of Durga or Parvati. Tara is perceived at core as the absolute, unquenchable hunger that propels all life. The complexion of Tara is blue and she is also called Neel Saraswati.


Tara Sadhna is mainly accomplished to gain knowledge, wisdom, wealth and totality of life. Tara Sadhna also provide protection from natural calamities, accidents and other perils from life.


Mahavidya Tara Origin


The oral tradition gives an origin to the goddess Tara. The legend begins with the churning of the ocean between the Devas and Asuras. Lord Shiva drank the poison (Halahala) that was created from the churning of the ocean (in the process turning his throat blue and earning him the epithet Nilakantha), thus saving the world from destruction, but fell unconscious under its powerful effect. Tara Ma appeared and took Shiva on her lap. She suckled him, the milk from her breasts counteracting the poison, and he recovered.


Mahavidya Tara Dhyanam


Tara is described as seated in the pratyalidha asana, on the heart of a corpse, supreme, laughing horribly, holding cleaver, blue lotus, dagger and bowl, uttering the mantra Hum, coloured blue, her hair braided with serpents, the Ugratara. She bestows all supernatural powers.


How To Prepare The Tara Yantra

  • This yantra  is made on Bhooj Patra with Ashat Gand or on gold, silver or Copper plate.
  • After its installation, daily pooja of the Devi is be performed with Tara mantra while sitting in sidhasana. 
  • After which pooja of the yantra should be performed.
  • Light incense, diya and offer flowers.
  • Do the puja while in a comfortable asana. After doing all " Nyas ".
  • The sadhaka should meditate on the goddess yantra and offer "panch pushpa" to her.
  • Seven lakh "Japas" of the mantra are to be made with one lakh mantra and "homa". 

Mahavidya Tara Mantra as per Mahodadhi as

"ॐ ह्रीं स्त्रीं हुं फट् ॥"

"Om Hreem Streem Hum Phat "

If Om is removed it becomes the Ekajata Mantra.

If Om & Phat both are removed it becomes Nila Saraswati Mantra.
