Shiv Ratri puja vidhi


Shivaratri is great festival of convergence of Shiva and Shakti.The greatest celebration for Lord Shiva is at the end of the Lunar month of Magh on the 13th night/14th day of the dark fortnight (usually in February or March). It is Maha Shivaratri, and it is a very sacred night for all lovers of Lord Shiva. 
Lord Shiva is the great Transformer who transitions us from the darkness of ignorance to the light of divinity. He helps us to move beyond our attachments so that we may discover the eternal Consciousness that shines behind our perceptions.

Legends Related With Shivratri


 Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati got married on the day of Maha Shivratri. Thus from 'Nirgun Brahman' He became "Sagun Brahman" due to Maya power of Parvati.

 On the day of Maha Shivratri at midnight, Lord Shiva revealed his Lingam form. Thus devotees perform the Rudra Abhishekham at midnight of Mahashivratri to worship the formless Sadashiv.

 Lord Shiva had revealed to Maa Parvati that the 14th night of the Krishna Paksha is His favorite night and that devotees who worship Him on thus night will surely receive His blessings.  Lord Shiva drank the poison Halahal that emerged during the churning of Kshir Sagar or the milky ocean and saved the world from humanity on this day. Due to the poison the Lord's throat turned as He came to be known as 'Neelkantha'.  Also on the night of Mahashivratri Lord Shiva is said to have revealed the Tandava, the dance of primordial conception, preservation, sustenance and destruction.

As per the pooja vidhi of maha shivratri, Shiva linga abisheka has to be done with six different materials. The materials are as follows,

  • Milk is for the blessing of purity and piousness.
  • Yogurt is for prosperity and progeny.

  • Honey is for sweet speech.

  • Ghee is for victory.

  • Sugar is for happiness.

  • Water is for purity.

Hymns in praise of Lord Shiva such as Shiv Mahimna Stotra, Shiv Tandava stotram, Lingashtakam,Shiv Panchakshri Stotram and Amogh Shiv Kavach are sung with great devotionPeople repeat the Panchakshara Mantra, Om Namah Shivaya.

He who utters the Names of Shiva during Shivaratri, with perfect devotion and concentration, is freed from all sins. He reaches the abode of Shiva and lives there happily. He is liberated from the wheel of births and deaths.
